As a matter of interest, with video card problems, if
(in /etc/X11/xorg.conf)  you set the driver section as:
         Driver  "vesa"

You will almost always get a usable desktop, but the resolution will be
an absolute maximum of 1024 x 768. This is good enough for some
purposes and at least gives you something usable from which to launch
browsers etc. to find the correct drivers.
