After reading your messages and Gustin's one, I think your partition is
full or something like that.
The  command
m...@mymachine:~$ df
should show you the state of you disk, if some 100 % appears.
I'm right ;-)

Also see "man df" for more options.

Anyway, you can run as root :

aptitude clean
(This would delete temporary files by exemple and free some space).

Then, try again using Synaptic or running
aptitude update
aptitude dis-upgrade

I had the same problem as I upgraded a computer from Etch to Lenny.
