Ross, were you able to install the driver ? If so, add this line to
/etc/default-linux-restricted-modules-common :
DISABLED_MODULES="nv nvidia_new"
You might also need to delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf and run nvidia-xconfig.
Reboot and let me know what happens.
What nVidia chipset do you have ?
