Hi, I gave 64studio 3 beta a quick shot. I must say, as a musician I'm a bit disappointed. I did really tested the performance, I do believe this is a strong point of 64studio.
Lay-out: - I didn't like the wallpaper and didn't have a few options to change it, without having to download stuff. - after login I got an brown screen, not very polished. - The menu looks like Linux has been standing still in the last 10 years. I would prefer a opensuse gnome main menu, with favorite apps and a search function. conservative: - lilypond, a core app for musicians, is outdated. A distro for musicians should have a stable and recent Lilypond imho. Lilypond users advices 2.12. - no wysiwyg notation editor like NtEd or Musescore - No tools to make working with lilypond more easy, like Frescobaldi (which I prefer) or Jedit with lilypondtool or denemo - no Ardour with LV2 (I expect to have Ardour 2.8 with FST and LV2 in 3.0) - (no easy way to enable VST? dssi-vst, wine, wineasio?) - no LV2 plugins - no LV2 apps like zynjacku - (btw is jconv installed?) Not many app choices: - I really do miss qtractor being installed as default. It's one of the fine apps in linux audio (easy gui for example compared to Rosegarden). Moreover I don't seems to have a change to install it even from the sources.list!! - LMMS is not installed by default. LMMS is an app to create music fast and easy. Those installed plugins and instrument are handy to use with other apps like Qtractor. Moreover I don't seems to have a change to install it even from the sources.list!! - It seems I have not very many choices to install different dssi plugins. - No guitar software at all. No rakarrack which is a pretty decent app. No guitarix, no tuxguitar for tablature notation. - no metronome which works with Jack, like klick and its gui gtklick. - no mixer, like jack_mixer muldimedia player: - why totem and not mplayer or vlc (which could work nice with jack)? Configuration: - Why relatime? Isn't it better to have noatime for audio? Why should I choose 64studio instead of default Ubuntu or Debian? Ok, the configuration is nice, but it does seems to narrow my possibilities as a musician instead of extent and improve it! :/ I suggest to: - add some apps like I mentioned. - make it possible for users by default to install additional audio apps (like it is possible in normal Ubuntu). Moreover, make sure there is more choice then in plain Ubuntu and make sure those packages in the repo are up-to-date. - Don't be to conservative and encourage for example new developments like LV2, wysiwyg notation editor etc. Kind regards, \r _______________________________________________ 64studio-users mailing list [email protected] http://lists.64studio.com/mailman/listinfo/64studio-users
