This is a great direction Dave. I am just starting a similar
journey myself with a view to becoming a Debian packager
in multimedia distros. There is a lot to learn. Stay on it..

I started here

http://www.debian.org/devel/

and went right back to basics with a full revision of
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/

aiming towards a thorough understanding of

http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/

so when something is missing/ not working, it's possible
to go through the proper steps to put it into
the repo.
