Possibly you have a router or other machine on your network which is handing out DHCP leases without you realising. I suggest you unplug one machine from the network, then on the other run in a terminal: sudo dhclient eth1 where eth1 is the network device on that machine. If a DHCP server answers then it should identify itself by IP address. If it only answers when you plug the other machine in, then that's the one running the DHCP server :-) Cheers!
