For future reference, check to see which IPs are actually bound to your

sudo /sbin/ip addr

The second line usually provides a clue to which device it is talking
about.
eg. "link/ether" followed by a MAC address.  If this were a firewire
device it would be something like link/ieee1394"

It should also be noted that you can have more than one IP address
assigned to the same card.  You can have a DHCP assigned IP as well as
several static IPs, all bound to the same network adaptor.

Even if you assign a static IP, you still need to first do a "sudo
ifdown eth0" to disable the dhcp client, otherwise your computer will
continue to make DHCP requests. Then a "sudo ifup eth0" should do the
trick.  I believe you can do all of this with the network manager
applet, but since I don't use it I cannot really comment further.

I personally disable the network manager as I am very comfortable with
the traditional tools.  My day job also pretty much requires features
and configurations not supported by the network manager.
