PS: An alternative might be to pay for sound samples that have a better 
quality than those free soundfonts and GIGs. Most free soundfonts I know 
come with a more worse or equal quality, the Roland MT-32 has got. If 
you need e.g. stuff like an ARP emulation with synced step sequencer, I 
guess there isn't something like that for Linux, but for Windows. If you 
like to have something like a DX7 or Prophet 5 emulation neither Windows 
nor Linux can do it, anyway, an application like Hexter isn't bad at 
all, it just can't replace a DX7, but still can be useful as virtual synth.
