In ZigBee IP, using EAP-TLS allowed potential re-use of TLS library for both network access and application security. Some perceive it as a "heavyweight" solution but I have yet to come across anything significantly lighter weight, taking into consideration all aspects of the initial exchange, including discovery, relay etc.
