When I did my own thing in Vegas I used previous jobs as guesstimates.
I never gave guarantees on time if it was a first time customer. You
never know what your going to run into when your running cable or
removing spyware.

I don't even know what people charge out here for stuff. In Vegas it
as $100/hr. 1 hour min, after that they were billed $25/15min. That
was for anything on site except adding network drops. Which were $100
per drop which included the cable, punching it down, jack box
installation making it look all pretty and basic switch config in case
the port was deactivated. Although I would on occasion pickup a pc for
virus/spyware removal to save a customer money. Onsite is always by
the hour, shop time I only charged for my time in front of the PC.

What billing strategies do you guys use?

To protect myself, I usually bid high on new clients. I double,
possibly triple what I think it's going to take.

If I think that it's going to take 2 hours, I'll bid 6. If I do it in
2 hours, I'll maybe charge 3, and tell them that b/c I finished things
early I used that extra time to do something else important on their
network. If they contest what I did, then I'll offer to give them
their money back (which I've never had anyone take me up on).

I've done this twice over the last month, and each time it seemed to work.

Overall, I just give a broad range (say, 1-4 hours). I tell them I
don't know but if they hire me, then they should be prepared to spend
the 4 hours. Once I build enough political capital, I usually don't
have to deal with this.
