I agree, It doesn't get much easier then locate and/or find|grep. It is just nice to see a big company like google contributing to something other then google.

So yes, for me, locate+find+grep are the right most excellent tools. For many other people ... many people put all their textual data in word processor files. Some people put all their files on the Desktop or in random, soon-forgotten, non-hierarchical, unorderly locations. Many many people, whether by nature or per misinformation, are strongly averse to the command line. I believe it is to this scenario that Beagle, Google Desktop Search, and the like are targeted.
