If you can boot from CD/DVD it sould have come with a hardware diagnostic disk. If you no longer have it you can download it from apples site as an iso and burn it to disk.

Hi guys, A friend of mine, Gary, has the following Mac problem. Anyone have any advice? Roger ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Gary Chartier <[email protected]> Date: Jul 6, 2007 4:09 PM Subject: Mac problem To: Roger Rustad <[email protected] > Thanks a lot for offering to help. Here's the problem at present: 1. Until today, the following has been the case for the last two weeks: when I attempted to start up, the hard drive on my G4 (running OS 10.3.9) would spin aimlessly. Attempts to start up from the install CD or in Safe or Verbose modes were unsuccessful. 2. Today, I succeeded in starting up from Firewire hard drive. I ran Disk Utility. (a) I ran Repair successfully. (b) I ran Repair Permissions successfully, though in the middle of the permissions repair process the disk I was seeking to fix spun for a long time. The spinning finally stopped and the repair of permissions was completed. 3. Unsure of the problem, I did a fresh install of OS 10.3. Starting up from the install disks was now possible, for whatever reason (perhaps because I'd been able to start with the system running, in virtue of my use of the external HD). 4. The install appeared to be complete. Then, however, the computer refused to restart following the installation. Instead, after it began to enter shut down mode, the HD began to spin aimlessly. _______________________________________________ 909linux mailing list [email protected] http://909linux.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/909linux
