Gary,

I would guess that if you have problems booting from the CD, too, then
there is some issue with the controller or the motherboard (which,
come to think of it, is part of the MB anyway).  Reinstalling won't
help much, if at all, if this is the case.  If I'm not mistaken, which
I probably am, booting from a firewire drive uses the controller in
the electronics of the drive itself, at least for the boot process.

Perhaps a memory issue?  I assume flashing PRAM or starting with
extensions off didn't help?

I just think that if you can't boot properly from the internal hard
drive or from the CD, there is some hardware problem not directly
related to the hard drive.

However, I am not a Mac expert like Roger ;) so I wouldn't really
know...I'm just saying.
