It seems to me that you are bringing a useful perspective here, that of someone who has never seen any of this before.
Sometimes, when you've been doing this long enough, you forget what you know that you did not know. You, on the other hand, are asking questions, because you are facing known unknowns, but also unknown unknowns; and none of this is Unix, which I think you're used to. The coordinate system has changed. The old truism: "if you don't write it down, it didn't happen" -- you might want to keep a log, for personal and maybe shared use later. I would be interested to see how this goes. Maybe you could keep a document or what you learn. This "wait a minute, how did that file get saved on usb" -- well, the key in all this is "waiting until it stopped blinking" -- a lot happened there, and the usb was in stable state when you pulled it out --> the 'sync' part of unmount was not needed. I'll leave it there, save for one more thing: file servers are programs,, which means ... you can trace them. dtracy is a wonderful tool, worth learning. Ratrace can be useful too.
