Ahh thanks Nathan, I got her to try sfc but all that happened was a dos 
box flashing on the screen quickly and disappearing.  I did not know 
about the sufix /scannow

BTW can you still use scandisk on XP, I could not find it on my own pc 
on the usual path Start\Programs\Accesories\System tools?

You can use SFC in Windows XP.
You must specify "sfc /scannow" to active it.

You can also try reapplying Service Pack 2.  You must use the network
installation version.  Copy the file on CD and run it from Safe Mode.
