Yesterday morning I did the Windows Update thing (as I regularly do) for
my 1GHz PIII running Win 98se. It found 6 updates (4 for Windows, 2 for
IE, IIRC) so I clicked to download and install them, then clicked to say
"yes" to restarting the computer. The computer hung and never shut
down, so I had to power off, and after that it would not fully reboot
(it would appear to fully rebooted to the desktop, but an hourglass
remained next to the mouse pointer, and the computer would not respond
to the mouse or keyboard, except that the mouse pointer would move but
not respond to clicking the buttons, and the keyboard would not respond
to anything except Ctl-Alt-Del).

It took me two days to get it straightened out (after reinstalling Win
98 about 20 times); the final thing I did that appears to have done the
trick was that one of the 6 update files appears to have added itself to
the Startup tab of my MSConfig file, so I unchecked it (the file was
C:\Windows\System\KB891711\KB891711.exe).

Normally, after reinstalling Win98, I would do a Windows Update and
install all the new stuff, but I am a little concerned. Any brilliant
ideas on why this happened or if I am in danger if I install all the
updates again?

TIA

Matt
