Yes, telephone extension cords can be a problem, but it's really an issue with DSL service. I always recommend a cord of 6 to 10 feet in length. The real problem here is the grade of wiring used in extension cords. Since most are meant for voice as they use a very low grade of wiring. Often this isn't even true wiring, it is cotton thread coated in copper dust. This is used to reduce cost and increase flexibility. But, this extension type is unacceptable for use for data.
If you are using DSL what you can do is: use the shorter cord as provided with the modem, and then purchase a longer CAT5e cable (Ethernet) to run to the PC. These cables can be upto 100 m in length. Make sure your purchase a stranded-core copper cable. Stranded core will be bendable but not retain the bend if released. Solid-core cabling (cheaper) will retain the bend; it is not suitable for installation outside of a wall or ceiling because it is too easy to break the wiring. If you are using dial-up try a higher quality phone extension at the short length possible. Avoid using couplings, but rather use one continuous cord. Avoid installation near power adapters or fluorescent lamps. (within 6 inches) If this is still a problem you can extended the jack but use telephone-grade wiring.
