Ok, let's see... It was purchased in 1998 for starts (OLD!!!) It is my
neighbor's PC and her and her family are financially strapped right now so
I'm trying to help. It had Windows 98 on it - I do not have a boot
floppy..... from the dos prompt I ran format c:

Hi:

Depends on what OS you plan to install and what hardware
you have to install it with.  Also depends on the age of your
Computer.  Let us know.

Windows ME and XP can boot directly from the installation
CD but you may need to set the "Boot Order" to "CDROM"
first.

Windows 9X may need a Boot floppy, then install the OS
from the application CD.  How did you do a format?  Sounds
like you used a Boot floppy.

How old is your Gateway??  Windows XP may not install
on it.
