When I first bought XP I was in the habit of doing a wipe reinstall every
few months. When I had done this a few times I was told that I had to call
MS for activation, which I did. I got a very long SN. I haven't run into
that lately although I still do the wipe reinstall from time to time. As for
updated, I don't think that MS will refuse updates even before XP has been
activated. They don't want insecure XP installs out there causing even more
of a problem.
