Monitors rating on 'wear and tear' is hours operating, so this does
reduce it.  More importantly is that it saves power.  I think 2 hours
though is way too conservative.  A more agressive setting of 15
minutes will produce far better power savings.
A typical 17" CRT monitor uses about 120 W of power! LCDs use about 45 W.
You can set the monitor to turn off independently of the hibernation
feature.  
Remember: 
Hibernation turns the system *completely* off, putting your RAM
session safely onto the hard drive.  
Standby puts the system into a low-power state. (but a power
interruption will cause you to loose the contents of RAM)
