Resolution

Noted by Microsoft... The Lsass.exe process is responsible for
management of local security authority domain authentication and
Active Directory management. This process handles authentication for
both the client and the server, and it also governs the Active
Directory engine. The Lsass.exe process is responsible for the
following components: ** Local Security Authority ** Net Logon
service ** Security Accounts Manager service ** LSA Server service
** Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) ** Kerberos v5 authentication protocol
** NTLM authentication protocol". An 'optimization feature' of the
LSASS is it will try to acquire ALL available memory and dole it
back to the OS, on demand. This process is repeatedly cited in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base as the source of chronic memory leaks and
spontaneous lockups / hangs / crashes. It is primarily described as
a Domain Controller function with some client-side functionality
related to Authentication and Active Directory management.

This has been found to be a Microsoft issue with many possible
symptoms and causes. Microsoft has corrected this issue with Service
Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows XP.

To recover from this failure use the System Restore. If this fails
to recover the unit, run the system Quick Restore CD. Once the unit
is operational/recovered, down load and install Microsoft Service
Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows XP.

NOTE: When Quick Restoring the notebook all software/data NOT backed-
up will be lost.
