Hi John

One of the function keys along the top of the keyboard F5, I think you will
find is the one that controls the display and depending on what state the
control is in it will either pass display to the LCD screen, external screen
(monitor) or both at the same time. This control is accessed by pressing and
holding the "Fn" key and at the same time pressing the the F5 key to cycle
through the options.

It shoulds very much to me as if your display invertor or the lamp itself
has failed and this can be proved by connection an external monitor which
you know, works, and then using the F5 function as mentioned above. If you
can get a display on the external monitor but on the LCD screen, it means
the graphics card is working OK and it is the invertor (as you say that you
can a display on it but it is not usable), I would put my money on the
invertor being the fault and these can be found on Ebay for a few quid.

If it is the lamp. the only option is replace the screen as the lamps are
not replaceable as they are built into the screen itself and these can also
be picked on Ebay for a few quid
