The XP install disk provides a way to format the partition on which XP is
installed, usually C:

Of course doing that will also remove all applications. If instead of an XP
install disk you have one of the factory rescue disk sets or a restore
system that is already on the computer then you can use one of those.
Described below.

Computers used to come with disks, i.e. CD or DVD set that you can use to
reinstall the OS as well as all the bundled applications. Later some
companies stopped supplying these and created instead a special partition on
which these files were stored. Often the company would advice that you
create your own backup disk(s) since, if the computer crashes, you will have
no way to restore everything. Most companies will provide the install disks
for you at a fairly low price.
