The XP install disk provides a way to format the partition on which XPis

Of course doing that will also remove all applications. If instead ofan XP 
install disk you have one of the factory rescue disk sets or a restore 
system that is already on the computer then you can use one of those. 
Described below.
  
Computers used to come with disks, i.e. CD or DVD set that you can useto 
reinstall the OS as well as all the bundled applications. Later some 
companies stopped supplying these and created instead a specialpartition on 
which these files were stored. Often the company would advice that you 
create your own backup disk(s) since, if the computer crashes, you willhave 
no way to restore everything. Most companies will provide the installdisks 
for you at a fairly low price.
