How to Change the Master/Slave Designationon a Hard Drive
[http://www.ehow.com/how_6031_change-master/slave-designation.html]
When more than one hard drive is installedon a computer system, each drive
competes for control of the computer. To allowboth drives to work in harmony on
the same computer system, the controlling (orstartup) drive is designated the
master drive and the other drive is designatedthe slave drive. You can change
this designation. The following procedureapplies to any PC-compatible computer.
Steps:
1. Decide which hard drive willbe the startup (master) drive. If this drive
was the startup drive previously,or if it's a new hard drive, then the master
drive designation will already beset.
2. To change the designationof a new drive to be a slave drive, skip to step
4.
3. To change the designationof an existing drive to be a slave drive: Turn
off the computer, unplug thepower cord, remove the drive from its drive bay,
and disconnect the drive fromits power cord and ribbon cable.
4. Check the hard drive documentationor the label on the drive itself for
master/slave jumper settings.
5. Find the jumpers on thecircuit board of the drive. Jumpers are plastic
plugs with metal sleeves thatform a circuit between a pair of pins. Jumper
locations are labeled on theboard with a J followed by a number (such as J20).
6. Use tweezers or very smallpliers to remove or reposition the jumpers to
the configuration shown in thedocumentation or on the disk label.
7. Install (or reinstall) thehard drive in the computer. (See "How to Install
a Second HardDrive.")
Tips:
Jumpers are very small and easy tolose. Hold your hand over the jumper while
removing it to keep it from jumpingtoo far.
Store jumpers in a small plastic bagfor future use.

Subject: RE: [A-1-Computer_Tech]How do I delete partitions?
Thanks you for responding......the craziest thinghappened. I opened the
tower and "dah" were 2 "two" !!! hard drives! That explainsthe other
drive! Now I pulled them both out one is a 17 gb and the other a 20 gb well,
I want to keep the 20 gb in the computer and not the 17 gb so I pulled the
17 gb out and left the 20 gb and re-attached the cable. Now the computer is
NOT reading the hard drive at all!
What would be the reason why the computer is not reading the hard drive?
Could the cable be bad? The computer did read both drives when they were
both in the computer so I don't see why it would have a problem reading one.
Thanks a million!
Cindy

Ivan,
> Partition Magic is an excellent application! I use it too!
There is a partitioning program that is free called gparted.
http://gparted. <http://gparted.sourceforge.net/>sourceforge.net/
It was not as easy as just running PM. If anyone is interested in trying new
things.. not to mention saving money, they might want to try it.
