My personal advice is to do it and do it often. Neglecting to clean
out the inside of my computer was one of the things that kept my
merry-go-round of computer problems going earlier this year. My
machine got too hot, and I blew some capacitators on the mother
board. There's a possibility it might be fixable, but not until I
can get the cash money to do so.

And don't count on the technicians to do so. A few years ago when I
had problems, they did some minor cleaning for me while they had
it. I thought it was something nice they did regularly - this time
they didn't do it, or say anything about it, so I assumed...very
wrongly, as it turned out. When I asked about it upon turning it in,
"oh, we charge to do that," so a simple two minute wipe-out cost
$$. I'm not saying I wanted a deep cleaning or anything like that,
but it would have been nice if one of them had said something!
