It is now more common in international matches where there are extremists on both sides that ignite the violence, fuelled by mindless bigoted idiots and alcohol. I always felt it germinated after the mods & rockers clashes during the sixties, the mods evolved into skinheads and eventually football hooligans. I will keep an eye out for it, ironically I was just watching Quadrophenia on TV last week, made in 1979 all about the mods & rocker clashes.
