birdcrazy,

I think that you were clear. First you might fix the old computer if you
have the factory rsecue disk(s).
A fresh install can bring new life to an apparently aging computer.

> The HP's I have both are pre-installed with Windows XP ( UGH!)

I like HP. :-)

> The new computer that came today is Windows XP Media Center, my old

Well it does matter if you want Media Center because you can't just copy the
old OS and files across to the new computer without losing Media Center. Of
course if you do have rescue disk(s) or the new computer advices you to
create them you can experiment with copying files and if things go wrong you
can use the new rescue disks to fix the machine back up again. Three Cheers
to rescue disks [or any other rescue systems]

That may not change for the new computer, but it might be fixed if you run
the above mentioned rescue system.
The one thing you need to do whichever way you go is th back up your data
files to removable media. Then you will be safe to experiment if you have
rescue media for both machines.

See above about rescue systems. Unless the problem with the old machine is
hardware you can probably fix it.
If you do then you have two machines. I have fours all linkes using a router
and a KVM switch, keyboard, Video, Mouse. If nothing else you could use the
old machine as a place to back up your files.

I got that. If you have the install disk then you can do that easily.

You didn't mention it but that's easy too. All I do when I change computers
is to set up my eamil on the new machine. You will need your ID, password,
pop server name from the provider and smtp server name. Mine is
pop-server.wi.rr.com. Yours will probably be similar with the prividers name
as part of the server ID.l

> I can use my external Maxtor and Ghost to do the transfere,

I use Ghost too. Great program I create Ghost clones all oever the place,
on the machine, on external drives, etc.

> what to transfere that won't mess up the new pc.

Unless you have some rogue shareware I don't think that any of your programs
messed it up. Of couse it could be some kind of malware, but running the
rescue disks/system will get rid of all of that.

If you use Ghost to clone the old PC to the new machine there IS a change
that you will make it sick too.
Here's what I would do, on the old machine, find your data files and copy
them to data file folders, One for each program. Then you can copy those
folders to the external and from there to the new machine.

It would be ashamed to get rid of all the added features of the Media
Center, which is what will happen if you clone the old PC to the new. The
problems with the old may just get copied to the new if you you use Ghost.
Software is much more suceptible to problems than hardware in this kind of
situation.
