Oh - so you're using the USB to PS2 adapter that came with the mouse.  
I've found those to be not very reliable.  Someone posted a couple weeks 
ago with the same prob I think.  I had exactly the same prob a while 
back and ended up returning the mouse and buying a straight PS2 mouse.
Have a look at this page. It says that turning down Hardware 
Acceleration might help - it says to turn it "off", but turning it down 
just one notch should eliminate any mouse problems (hopefully).
