Hi Holly, If your address book is 'stolen', then likely your computer is compromised. Have you run updated virus scanner, several updated spyware scanners including Spybot, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware?
The information you received about the online email program is correct. If your computer is infected, the malware will have access to what is in your online address book as soon as you log in. A virus could do this, but more likely it is some sort of worm, trojan or other spyware. If your computer is compromised a new email address will not help, as the malware will still be there and sending email using your new email address. What security programs are you using? Firewall, anti-virus and spyware scanners? However, an email account can be hacked, especially if you are using an easily guessed password. Another way your computer can be accessed is if you are using a wireless connection through a router and you have not changed the default password for the router. Once you are certain your computer is safe and your email account is secure, send out an email letting people know you did not send the spam and that everything is secure. Ask them to please acknowledge your new safe email. Some may not reply, but most will unless this spam is still going out. Once again, the main problem stated was not that they stole my address, that happens all the time. This time it is my address book. They sent the same message advertising some kind of service under my address using my address book to send it to everyone in it. Your responses don't seem to address this problem. I'm concerned because all of these people will possibly have their spam protector snag my "real" mail and I won't be able to contact them. I was also concerned with the possibility it was a virus since another forum I'm on told me that my thought that using an online email program didn't mean that I couldn't be infected but that everything that I can view on my screen goes to my computer. (Not sure how that goes.) Well, I copied all the addresses where the spam was sent and deleted the messages themselves. This morning I received a response from gmail stating that if it happens again there's a button next to the Repy link and I should click on it and report it that way. Good thing to know for the future. Is there anything you all can think of that I can do to "recover my reputation" from spam protectors other than changing my address?
