I have Ubuntu installed in a folder on the C: drive of XP and it duel boots. You can run it off a CD or install it as a duel boot with XP or Vista.
I have it on an older computer for full use answering question an a Linux list. This in spite of the fact that one needs not buy anything. You can set it up to dual boot and run it on an existing PC. Of course OS X will now run Windows using one of the three programs designed to do that. I am using Parallels myself. And I installed Vista on my Mac Pro. Linux is a bit trickier to get used to, although Ubuntu Linux seems the easiest of the newer ones. And you can try most Linux versions now using what they call a LIVE CD. Boot with it and it runs the Linux version without installing it. If you want to you can eventually choose to install. I have always done my Linux experimenting on my 'spare' PC. Well I did dual boot occasionally.
