This might just be a mechanical problem.  There's either a sensor or 
little mechanical switch in the paper tray that tells the printer if 
there is paper in the tray.  Since you've had your printer for 2 years 
it might be a good idea to try to clean it out a little.  I don't know 
what model, but see if you can gentlly clean around inside the paper 
tray with a cue-tip or soft brush, or whatever you can come up with.
I would try taking the cover off and really cleaning out the insides 
with whatever home made tools I could come up with.
Repost the model and it would be easier to suggest a way to clean it.
