Hello,

Well, it's not that weird, if you did indeed install a *newer* program,
that your operating system cannot support. Since your *older* operating
system, does not have the .NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM. MSCOREE.DLL Security
Update on it, which that *newer* program depends on to be able to run,
you are receiving the error message when it doesn't find it. That is
really the only explanation that fits your situation, as Mscoree.dll
does not belong on your system.

I've forgotten if Windows 98 had Event Viewer on it or not, but if it
does, you can use it to get a more detailed error message, which will
tell you which program is attempting to load Mscoree.dll. Go to Start,
Run, and type eventvwr.msc on the command line of the Run dialog, then
hit Enter, or click the OK button with your mouse.

The Event Viewer will come up, and any errors will have an icon on their
line in the log file, that looks like a red circle with a white X in it
next to the word error. Right click the line the error message is on,
and select Properties from the pop up menu to see a more detailed
description of what the error is about, which will hopefully have the
name of the offending program in it.

At that point, you will know which program is attempting to load the
missing .dll file, and can proceed to uninstall it, which will eliminate
the error message.

There is also the possibility that some hacker wrote his virus code to
depend on the Mscoree.dll as well, and you have become infected with a
virus or trojan, that was targeted at the newer versions of Windows.
Either way,, a look in the Event Viewer's log file will point out the
culprit so you can get rid of it.

This is so wierd. Why would this error message suddenly appear on my start
up? Where could it have come from if it is alien to Windows 98?
