If the syncmaster is new it should have a great display.  If it's used, 
the screen brightness can decay over time.
If the adjustments on the syncmaster don't fix it - you can always set 
them back to factory by choosing the "reset" option.
But monitor display is also a function of the video card (or chip) in 
the PC.  If you plug the HP monitor into the same PC, is it dark too?
Some higher end vid card drivers offer lots of settings to adjust the 
display.  Try right-clicking on desktop, choose Properties, then the 
Settings tab (in XP).  If there's a "Advanced" button there, click it.  
Look around at all the settings there.  You'll maybe see a brightness 
and contrast.  These are different from the monitor's built-in settings 
- so changing them might fix your problem.
