I'm not 100% sure, but yes, I think the HDMI to VGA converter might 
affect the display quality.  To be sure, why don't you just plug your 
bright monitor into the adapter and see if it gets dim?

All geforce cards come with nice nvidia driver utilities that let you 
control lots of display options.  Right-click on desktop, Properties, 
Settings tab, and then click the "Advanced" button.  This will open the 
nvidia display settings utility.  Up the brightness and/or contrast for 
your dim monitor.  If you don't have a lot of video options settings, 
then you might not have the correct geforce drivers installed for your 
card.  You can download them from the card maker's support site.
