If it's getting hot enough to leave black marks, I wouldn't leave it unattended. It could def catch fire. I don't think overheating would cause what you describe. It sounds more like the board is being fed too much power. Maybe the power supply is defective? But normally I'd think the board would shut down if it was being fed too much power - so it might be board itself that's bad - not the power supply. Did it just start doing this when the weather got really hot?
