Look up your usb drive online and see what its system requirements are.  
If it's a large capacity drive it might require Windows XP (service pack 
3) or later.  I'm guessing you've got Windows Vista, or maybe an early 
version of XP on your system?

Another thing to check... you say one of your ipods isn't recognized... 
if you've got more than a couple usb devices plugged in at the same time 
your pc might not have sufficient voltage to power them all.  Try 
unplugging some of the other devices and then plugging in the ipod.

Since you have a computer guy you might ask him about reformatting your 
internal hard drive to clean out your system of junk and viruses, 
malware, etc.  Of course this will erase all your personal data - so be 
sure to back it up first.
