I should also mention that android phones come with quite sophisticated
voice recognition. At almost any screen that requires text input you
have the option of tapping the screen once and speaking what you want to
type. The results are not quite 100% accurate, but I'd say approaching
90%. For example, you can send a text by simply tapping the screen once
and saying "Send text to 'john doe', What time are we supposed to meet
for dinner?". The text window will open addressed to 'john doe', with
the body text already filled in. You can just tap "Send" to send the
text. Works the same for email. I very seldom have to use the onscreen
keyboard at all.
You can use your voice to search the web, create to-do lists, add
calendar entries. If you need directions you can just say, "Navigate to
123 Main Street", and you'll get voice instructions to your destination.

I'm just saying that smartphones have made major accessibility advances
for handicapped people. There are screen reader apps to read aloud what
is on the screen, magnification apps for enlarging text and images,
etc., etc.
Here's a video demonstrating some of Google Voice's features:

But ultimately you've got to stick with what you are comfortable with.
There are still some models of slider phones available and they are
usually a lot less expensive than a newer smartphone.
