Hi: There is a switch built into the headphone jack that cuts the sound going to the speakers when a plug is inserted. Problems could be just within that jack. Also, Headphones and speakers operate at two very different levels of power, high for speakers and low for headphones. There is an amplifier in there to build up the power for the speakers that is not used and not necessary for the headphones so the failure can be anywhere in that amplifier. If you decide not to get this fixed there are several external speakers you can use to get by for under $35. Check _www.geeks.com_ (http://www.geeks.com) . Because of the low level that's provided for headphones, special Laptop "amplified" speakers must be purchased. Hope this helps. Bye Emile In a message dated 31-Aug-13 3:27:30 A.M. Solved: Well I tried a lot of suggestions & still didn't hear sound & couldn't decide if it was hardware or software. Then my friend suggested booting to Linux. I played a .wav file and still no sound came out of the internal speakers. So I guess the answer is hardware.
