Bummer.  Well, you know the last resort would be to restore your HP to 
factory defaults.  It probably has a restore partition on the hard drive 
and you could do it in about 15 minutes.  It'll be like the day you 
bought it - and maybe the speakers will work again (maybe).  Of course 
"everything" that you've added since you bought it will be gone and need 
to be replaced and reinstalled.  Kind of a nuisance, but you would know 
for sure if the speakers are dead.
Also, as Emile suggested, a small set of amplified speakers will work - 
but aren't very mobile.
