My argument is really about a common sense interpretation of the
meaning rather than a precise reading of the draft standard (where
the wording has come from the abc2ps documentation).

I would like both to be treated as one word with 3 syllables and
have written my parser to achieve this.
As regards your particular problem with "xx - _", perhaps it is
time to write some gawk scripts to change - to \- or hack abc2ps
to give you nicer output, or maybe both.
