This is just the sort of thing that can happen when a lot of independent
developers work in the same field introducing their own innovations with
little regard for a generally accepted standard or the work that others do.
The system that comes out top depends on who has the most clout rather than
which is best. The result is inconvenience and confusion for the general
user. Now what does that remind me of?

Once again, the general user (the musician who doesn't happen to be a C
programmer) doesn't have a voice. Presumably Chris Drake will be told that
if he thinks Fife & Drum notation is so important he should go off and write
his own software to do it (with midi generation).
By the way, has the voluntocracy come to any consensus about the V: command
yet? Have you had one of those democratic votes between developers? If you
are going to claim the governance do a bit of governing for goodness sake.
