I don't know if there is a standard way---but I'd be tempted to
put a legato mark, i.e. a little hyphen, over/under the straight notes,
which would probably get the idea across. (To me, at least, but perhaps
others would interpret this differently.) I know this can be done with
abc2mtex, but I think that other programs will do it too. (Won't the
notation "^-"a put a hyphen over the a? This was discussed some time
back.)

Hmmm...not really. The swing in a hornpipe is usually less severe
than a>bc>d would indicate---tho different people play it different
ways---about one-and-a-half to one, or at most two to one, rather than the
three to one that a>bc>d would be. Same for jazz, I think---most swing
I've heard is similar. Of course, R:hornpipe is fine for the abc itself,
but it doesn't show up in the printed dots... But you can always put "with
a swing" at the head of the tune.

Nor do I, but Barfly has a means of making midi macros for the
playback, via the u: field. I don't know if this particular thing is
possible in it, but if you convince Phil Taylor it's useful, it probably
will be. :-)
