The latter pair is actually useful for some picese.  To give a couple of
examples, Charles Ives's first string quartet has a section in which the
first violin and viola are in one meter, and the second violin and cello
are in another meter.  Bela Bartok wrote several duets in which the two
voices are playing in different keys.
