Dear abcusers,

It's not clear to me what's the proper definition of
note tuples (such as triplets, etc.)

http://www.vicfirth.com/education/features/webrhythms/18.html

Gives the following rules:

2 notes in time of 3
3 2
4 3
5 4
6 4
7 4
8 9
9 8
10 8

While the ABC standard:
http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc2mtex/abc.txt

tells the following:

(2 2 notes in the time of 3
(3 3 notes in the time of 2
(4 4 notes in the time of 3
(5 5 notes in the time of n
(6 6 notes in the time of 2
(7 7 notes in the time of n
(8 8 notes in the time of 3
(9 9 notes in the time of n

If the time signature is compound (3/8, 6/8, 9/8, 3/4,
etc.) then n is three, otherwise n is two.

How can these two definitions be reconciled?
What is the correct rule?
What is the meaning of the 'n' rule in the ABC
standard?

 Irwin Oppenheim
