Indeed, it is as simple as you describe, quite easy to code, and it is my understanding that all the standard ABC programs that currently accept the !-line break notation (jcabc2ps, abcm2ps, abcpp) actually use this rule-of-thumb. This whole issue is not something to get very upset or excited about. I don't really understand why this thread is still going on...
