My take on the subject is

Most of the musicians I know who use abc

1) are not members of this list.
2) are not computer programmers
3) do not know how to alter faulty abc files.
4) would not know how to use command driven programs.
5) use ABC2WIN to display the abc as score (I once met a banjo player who
liked Muse because you can produce tablature.)

If this small sample is representative of the rest of the world then any
files produced using the !----! format is going to puzzle a lot of people.

Remember the original use of abc is to share simple folk tunes on computer
systems, the idea of using it as a typesetting program came later, is a
minority facility and should not be allowed to mess up existing material.
