Agreed.  It does have the advantage of being automatically ignored
by programs which don't understand it though.  I've always thought
of it as mainly suitable for completely program-specific features
which are not intended to be interpreted by other programs, and
also for experimental things which may, at some time in the future
get a real field identifier.

No more so than any other aspect of the language.  After all,
you've got to read some abc documentation in order to write
anything in the language.  _E3/ is even more cryptic.

Maybe because you don't have a large abc program which you've spent
many years developing and are therefore not groaning at the prospect
of how much work it would take to support full-word labels.
