Agreed. It does have the advantage of being automatically ignored by programs which don't understand it though. I've always thought of it as mainly suitable for completely program-specific features which are not intended to be interpreted by other programs, and also for experimental things which may, at some time in the future get a real field identifier. >N: is cryptic No more so than any other aspect of the language.
