I would like to add that a DOS port would not be useless and pointless. I
have many friends which have only one modern computer, which mean that the
family must timeshare the useage. They have however often an old 486 in
their attic.
If they could use it together with dos to make their wordprocessing it
would
be very nice.

So, it is not only a "see if it can be done" and "see if I can do it"
thing,
it is in fact also a quite useful thing. Not to mention the usefulness in
the 3rd world, where I believe modern computers are a luxuary.

I don't know if a port to DOS is very practical for a GUI intensive application like
AbiWord. However, in relation to your point, you may want to go to www.freedos.org
which is developing a GPL version of DOS. Although the current offering is beta 7, or
something like that, the offering is quite mature having been in development for
years. In addition, they have tons of links to various DOS programs that are
available for free (download, etc.). One of the stated purposes of FreeDOS is to
provide an OS for older hardware (there are other uses of DOS also). Hopefully you
can something useful there for reviving an old computer.

J. Raines
