As i know the Alt Gr + vowel only works MS windows for certain locales
(aka region settings).  The orginal message came from someone who i
would geuss is American from their email address, and as far as i know
this wont work if the locale is set to en-US.  Please correct me if im
wrong.

So the orginal answer of Insert -> Symbol will definately work and the
other suggestions might work, depenging on what Operating System you use
and how it is setup.
